Etymology
Unknown; possibly related to *bōku (“beech”), *bōkijā (“beech”), lye being commonly made from beech ash.[1] Perhaps cognate with Gothic 𐌿𐍃𐌱𐌰𐌿𐌲𐌾𐌰𐌽 (usbaugjan, “to sweep”).
