From *ampr (sour) + *. Compare *sūrā (sorrel), from *sūr (sour). Compare also the parallel formations Sanskrit अम्ल (amlá, sour, bitter; wood sorrel) and Latvian amuols (yellow sorrel), apparently from the same root with a slightly different suffix.
