Proto-West Germanic
Etymology
Possibly from *þimstr (“dark, dusky”) + *-ī (adjective suffix), with unexpected *m > *w.[1] Or, perhaps from Proto-Germanic *þiustrijaz, *þiuhstrijaz, from Proto-Indo-European *tewh₂- (“to swell”). Compare Proto-Slavic *tuskъ (“gloom”).
