Proto-Uralic
Etymology
Perhaps akin to Proto-Indo-European *mesg- (“to dip, sink”). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
Reconstruction
The Mari, Permic and Hungarian descendants suggest rather *muśke-, which may potentially be due to the labializing influence of *m-. In the case of Mari, Aikio (2013) proposes that such a development near labial consonants is indeed regular: compare also e.g. *kolmes, *kopa.
