Etymology

Probably from the l-participle *tulъ + *-iti of otherwise obsolete Proto-Balto-Slavic *táuˀtei (to entangle, to coil) whence (via another extension) Lithuanian taujóti (to squash), Latvian taũjât (to wander). Possibly distantly related to Sanskrit तौति (tauti, to gain power, strength).

  2. to contain, to enfold, to sheath (perhaps secondary from *tulъ, *tula (quiver, envelop) + *-iti)
    (by extension) to hide, to shelter
