- Per Derksen, from Proto-Indo-European *swr̥bʰ-, from *swerbʰ-. Cognate with Lithuanian skver̃bti (“to pierce”).
- Per Vasmer, cognate with Latvian svãrpsts (“drill”), Old Norse svarf (“sawdust”).
