Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *strujas. Cognate with Lithuanian strùjus (uncle, old man).

Fasmer says that it can be from Proto-Indo-European *ph₂tḗr. Morphologically ptr->ttr->str + Proto-Balto-Slavic *-jas.
