From *otъ- + *verzti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *verź-, from Proto-Indo-European *werǵʰ-. Cognate with Lithuanian ver̃žti (“to string, to squeeze, to tighten”), Old High German wurgen (“to strangle”).
