Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *m(a)ūˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *muH- (<*miuH-) and cognate with Lithuanian maudyti, Latvian maut, Latin moveo and Sanskrit mī́vati according to Derksen (2008: 338) (see Proto-Indo-European *mew-). According to Pokorny 741-743, from a PIE *mew meaning 'wet, damp, to wash'.
