Proto-Slavic
Alternative reconstructions
- *blěknǫti (per ESSJa)
Etymology
Uncertain. Common theories include:
- Related to Lithuanian blùkti (“to weaken”) and, possibly, Latin flaccus (“flaccid”).
- Related to Lithuanian nubliẽkti (“to fade”).
The descended terms have also been proposed to be borrowed from a Germanic language, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *blaikijaną (“to bleach”),[1][2] supported by the terms' relatively late attestations.
