Reconstruction:Proto-Italic/pwījos

This Proto-Italic entry contains reconstructed terms and roots. As such, the term(s) in this entry are not directly attested, but are hypothesized to have existed based on comparative evidence.

Proto-Italic

Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *puH-yós, from *pewH- (to be clean, pure). If South Picene puíh (AP 2 Castignano) belongs here, then the pius-rule would not be of Proto-Italic date (cf. Raoul Zamponi South Picene (Routledge World Languages) 2021, p.21). This would kill the pius-rule as an Italo-Celtic isogloss. The Proto-Italic form would then still be *puHijos.

Adjective

*pwījos (comparative *pwījōs, superlative *pwījisemos)[1]

  1. pious, devout
