Reconstruction:Proto-Italic/iðei

This Proto-Italic entry contains reconstructed terms and roots. As such, the term(s) in this entry are not directly attested, but are hypothesized to have existed based on comparative evidence.

Proto-Italic

Etymology

From the Proto-Indo-European pronominal root *i- and an uncertain second element, see reconstruction notes.

Adverb

*iðei[1]

  1. there

Reconstruction notes

Latin would phonetically suggest *iβei, but a comparison to Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hidʰá (here) would imply that the adverb was originally *iðei with the b from ubi (where), where could regularly become Latin -b- due to a preceding u.

Descendants

  • Latin: ibī
  • Umbrian: 𐌉𐌚𐌄 (ife), ife
