Proto-Italic
Etymology
From earlier *xaidos (to differentiate it from a later form *haidos if the shift */x/ > */h/ in the Italic languages already happened during late Proto-Italic), probably a loanword from a pre-Indo-European substrate language due to the fact that it cannot be derived from any known root. The only sure cognate is Proto-Germanic *gaits (“goat”). According to Bjørn, from the same source as Proto-Semitic *gady-, Proto-Berber *a-ɣăyd, Proto-Nakh *gaazaᶰ.[1]
