From Proto-Indo-Iranian *názdas, from Proto-Indo-European *nésd-o-s, from *nesd- + *-os. Cognate with Sanskrit नेदीयस् (nedīyas, “nearer”), Breton nes (“near”), Welsh nes (“nearer”), Oscan nessimas (“next”).
