From Proto-Indo-Iranian *názdas, from Proto-Indo-European *nésd-o-s, from *nesd- + *-os. Cognate with Sanskrit नेदीयस् (nedīyas, nearer), Breton nes (near), Welsh nes (nearer), Oscan nessimas (next).
