From Proto-Indo-European *h₃r̥s-wó-s[1], from *h₃ér-o-s ~ *h₃ér-es-o-s (elevation)[2] (compare Ancient Greek ὄρος (óros, mountain)) + *-wós, from *h₃er- (to rise) + *-os.
