Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *léwh₃trom (that which is used for washing; washbasin, bathtub), from the root *lewh₃- (to wash, bathe) + *-trom (instrument noun suffix). Cognate with Proto-Celtic *lowatrom (washbasin) and Proto-Germanic *lauþrą (niter soap, lather, foam). Compare also early Latin lavābrum < *lowh₃-eh₂-dʰrom.
