From Proto-Indo-European *dol-éh₂ (reckoning, calculation, fraud), from the root *del- (to reckon, calculate). Compare Ancient Greek δόλος (dólos, trick(ery), deceit; bait), Hittite talliije/azi (to pray to, evoke (a deity)), and Old Armenian տող (toł, line, row).[1]
