Proto-Germanic

Etymology

Unknown. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *seygʷ-, variant of *seykʷ- (to pour out; gush; stream; flow; trickle) (whence *sīhwaną (to percolate, filter) and *saiwiz (sea)), from *sey- (to be wet; dribble; run), but the delabialization would be unexpected.
