Alternatively perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *gwosdos (piece of wood). Compare Proto-Celtic *bozdos (tail, penis), Middle Irish bot (tail, penis), Welsh both (hub, nave), Proto-Slavic *gvozdь (nail, tack, peg).[1]
