From Proto-Indo-European *h₁éh₁t-mō ~ *h₁h₁t-m̥nés (“breath, spirit”), from *h₁eh₁t- + *-mō. Cognate with Proto-Indo-Iranian *HáHtmā. Compare *ēþrǭ.
