Proto-Finnic

Etymology

From *sata + *-ma. The root is probably borrowed from Proto-Germanic *staþaz (whence English stathe, German Gestade (shore), dialectal Danish stade (harbor)).

Another possible explanation is derivation from *sata- (to rain, to fall down), with the semantic development "place of falling" > "place of descending (into a boat)", for which a parallel appears in *valkama.

Noun

*satama
