Unknown. Cognate with Proto-Samic *rëntē. Germanic origin, such as from Proto-Norse *ᛊᛏᚱᛁᚾᛞᚨ- (*strinda-) (whence Old Norse strind (border, side, land), Norwegian strind (slice, line, row)) is unlikely due to the semantic gap.
