Uncertain. Possibly borrowed from Proto-Norse [Term?], from Proto-Germanic *krampaz (compare Swedish krämpa (ailment)), or alternatively, borrowed from Proto-Baltic *ramba- (whence Lithuanian rambùs (sluggish, slow)).
