Etymology

Perhaps derived from *asëdak (to live) (potentially with + *-ja) and ultimately from Proto-Uralic *ëśe-. Alternatively possibly:

  • Derivative from a Proto-Uralic root *ate + *-ja (implying *acja), compare Eastern Khanty от (ot).
  • Borrowing from Proto-Germanic *(uz)andiją (implying *acja), for which there appears to be little evidence however; the proposed descendant Swedish ärende (task, errand) is from Proto-Germanic *airundiją.
  • As per Vershinin, relation to Erzya азкс (azks, story) (from азомс (azoms, to offer; tell; curse; promise)),[1] which is not compatible with any of these.

Noun

*asja[2]
