Etymology
This etymon seems only attested in the Chukotkan branch. Note also Chukchi рьавӈай (rʔawŋaj), a place name literally meaning “Whale Mountain”, an obvious compound of ръэв (rʔew, “whale”) + ӈэгны (ŋeɣnə, “mountain”, from the stem ӈэй-, ŋej-) (Fortescue, 2005: 194, 258).
