Etymology

Possibly from earlier *(s)tannos, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)dʰnwos, *(s)dʰonu (fir), if not from a non-Indo-European substrate language. Cognate with Proto-Germanic *dannǭ (fir, pine) (Old High German tanna (fir wood), Old Saxon danna (pine)), Albanian thanë (cranberry bush), Avestan 𐬚𐬀𐬥𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬭𐬆 (θanuuarə, bow), Sanskrit धनु (dhanu, bow)), Hittite 𒄑𒋫𒈾𒀀𒌑 (GIŠta-na-a-ú /tanau/, fir), and perhaps Ancient Greek θάμνος (thámnos, thicket).
