Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *lh₂ps-, from *leh₂p- (to shine). Cognate with Hittite [script needed] (lāpzi, glows), Ancient Greek λάμπω (lámpō, to shine) (whence English lamp), Old Prussian lopis (flame).[1]
