Etymology

Uncertain. Maybe a derivative of the nasal present Proto-Indo-European *kl̥-né-h₂-ti ~ *kl̥-n-h₂-énti (to beat) of Proto-Indo-European *kelh₂-.[1] Other suggestions include from *(s)kelH- (to cut), whence Proto-Germanic *skiljaną (to cut),[2] or from *kel- (to drive), whence Latin callis (path).[3]
