Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bʰenH-tlom (“way, path”); or alternatively from *gʷʰen-tlom, from *gʷʰen- (“to strike, kill”), in the sense of “cleared path (in a wood)”; compare Proto-Germanic *banō (“path, cleared way”).
