According to Pokorny, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eǵʰ- (cow), see also Avestan 𐬀𐬰𐬍 (azī), Old Armenian եզն (ezn), Old Irish ag (cow).[1] Matasovic compares *h₂eǵ- (to drive), though with a semantic gap.
