Reconstruction:Latin/directiare

This Latin entry contains reconstructed terms and roots. As such, the term(s) in this entry are not directly attested, but are hypothesized to have existed based on comparative evidence.

Latin

Etymology

From dīrēctus + -iāre (causative verb-forming suffix).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /derekˈtʲare/, /drekˈtʲare/

Verb

*dīrēctiāre (Proto-Romance)

  1. to guide, direct
  2. to straighten
  3. to put in order

Reconstruction notes

For the treatment of the first vowel, cf. drictus and *dērēctus. The assignment of *dīrēctiāre to Proto-Romance proper is precarious as it depends on the single Sardinian form cited below. If the latter is really a later internal formation, or a calque from Italian, then *dīrēctiāre would be assigned to Proto-Italo-Western Romance.

Descendants

  • Italo-Romance:
    • Italian: drizzare, dirizzare
  • Western Romance of N. Italy:
  • Gallo-Romance:
  • Ibero-Romance:
  • Insular Romance:
    • Sardinian: derettare
