Etymology
Adapted borrowing of Icelandic Reykjavík, or a semi-learned borrowing from Old Norse Reykjavík, Røykjavík (“bay of smokes”). From reykja, genitive plural of reykr (“smoke”), and vík (“bay”). Equivalent to røyk + vik (the original genitive plural *røykje- / *røykja- is lost).
