From the specific epithet of Chelone pentstemon, the name used by Carl Linnaeus for Penstemon laevigatus, a blend of Ancient Greek πεντα- (penta-, five) + στήμων (stḗmōn, thread), because of its sterile fifth stamen (staminode).[1]
