Paart

Alternative forms

  • Puert (dialectal)

Etymology

From Middle High German porte, from northern Old High German porta, from Latin porta. Cognate with Ripuarian Pooz, German Pforte, Dutch poort. The expected form is Puert, which is indeed found dialectally in several areas (including the capital). Paart could be a backformation from the diminutive Päertchen. Otherwise it would require a Middle High German *parte.
