Etymology
First attested as asle in the first quarter of the 13th century. Compound of over (“upper, upstream”) and a compound of Old Dutch asc (“ash, Fraxinus excelsior”) and lo (“light forest”). The element over is a late addition to distinguish the settlement from Nederasselt. Compare Assel and Asselt.
