Dutch
Etymology
First attested as nunspiet in 1313. Etymology uncertain. The toponym is explained as *nuewenspete (derived from Middle Dutch nuwe (“new”) and spete (“dug ground”)) or alternatively as *nums-speet (derived from Middle Dutch nums (“nobody's, no-man's”) and spete (“dug ground”)). The first etymology is taken to mean "freshly dug ground", while the second etymology is explained as "no-man's land that anybody can use". The latter etymology fits slightly better with earlier forms of the name.
