First attested as De Nieuwe Strumpt in 1838-1857. Derived from nieuw (“new”) and Middle Dutch *strump (“tree trunk”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -t. The element nieuw was added to distinguish the settlement from Oude Strumpt.
