Etymology

First attested as nerven in 1392. Compound of Middle Dutch ner (nearby) and the dative plural form of hof (farmstead, homestead). So named to distinguish the settlement from Verhoven. Compare also the toponyms Naastenbest and Verrenbest and Doonheide and Verreheide.
