- From the personal name Mummo, ultimately from a Germanic name corresponding to *mundō (“protection”) + *mōdaz (“courage”).
- As a Swabian/Alemannic German surname, from the verb mummen (“to mumble”).
Both senses are comparable to Mumme, a spelling variant.
