Etymology
Borrowed from Arabic مُحَمَّد (muḥammad).
The inherited form would be Mħammed, which died out as a given name after the Rechristianisation of Malta, but was still attested as a surname up to the 15th century (then obviously borne by Christians). Even today it survives in the place name Ta’ l-Imħammed.
Pronunciation
