Etymology

First attested as monnickendam and monikendamme in 1288. Compound of Middle Dutch monic (monk) and dam (dam). Either named directly after a dam built by the monks of the Mariëngaarde monastery in Friesland or after a dam in the Monnikemeer lake, also named after monks from Mariëngaarde.
