Etymology
First attested as monnickendam and monikendamme in 1288. Compound of Middle Dutch monic (“monk”) and dam (“dam”). Either named directly after a dam built by the monks of the Mariëngaarde monastery in Friesland or after a dam in the Monnikemeer lake, also named after monks from Mariëngaarde.
