From miðr (“middle”) +‎ garðr (“yard; enclosured land; realm”) or directly from Proto-Germanic *midjagardaz (“Middle Earth”). Cognate with Old English middangeard, Old Saxon middilgard, Old High German mittilgart, Gothic 𐌼𐌹𐌳𐌾𐌿𐌽𐌲𐌰𐍂𐌳𐍃 (midjungards).
