From Phoenician 𐤌𐤋𐤒𐤓𐤕‎ (mlqrt), probably from 𐤌𐤋𐤊‎ (mlk, “king”) + 𐤒𐤓𐤕‎ (qrt, “city”) (compare Hebrew קרת‎ (qeret)), literally meaning "king of the city".
