Meloe + -idae. Meloe is of obscure origin, appearing as melloes in the writings of Paracelsus; possibly from Ancient Greek μέλω (mélō, “to probe a wound, care for”), or an alteration of Latin molestus, referring to liquid released from the joints when molested.
