English

Alternative forms

  • Māori (preferred usage in Māori text)
  • Mäori, Maaori (alternative usage in Māori text when macrons are not available)

Etymology

Borrowed from Maori māori (aborigine, native; normal, ordinary, plain). Doublet of Maoli.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈmaʊɹi/
    • (file)
  • (New Zealand, anglicised) IPA(key): /ˈmɐʉɹiː/, /ˈmæʊɹiː/
  • (New Zealand, approximating Māori pronunciation) IPA(key): [ˈmɑːɔɾi]
  • Rhymes: -aʊɹi

Noun

Maori (plural Maori or Maoris or (obsolete) Maories)

  1. A member of the indigenous people of New Zealand.

Usage notes

  • The plural Maori is now typically preferred, as the term is invariant in Māori.
  • The form Māori (with a macron) is preferred by some New Zealanders as a more accurate reflection of the Maori self-designation (even when an Anglicised pronunciation is used). A double vowel is occasionally used instead of a macron; this was formerly more common, but has fallen out of use since the Māori Language Commission's decision to adopt the macron (tohutō) as the standard representation of Māori long vowels.
