Etymology
Unknown. Possibly from Byzantine Greek πανγάλια (pangália), from παν- (pan-) + καλός (kalós) + -ία (-ía). Alternately, from (or assimilated to) Nogai mangali, from mangal, from Arabic مَنْقَل (manqal). First attested in Carta Pisana (13th century) as Pangalia.
