Lunen

Dutch
Etymology
First attested as to lunen in 1287. Etymology uncertain. Potentially of non-Germanic origin. Tentatively linked to Proto-Indo-European *leu- (“mud”) or *lu-. This would suggest that the toponym is derived from an ancient hydronym. Compare Loenen and Loenen aan de Vecht.
