First attested as in lutheri in the late 10th century. Etymology unknown. Proposed etymologies include a derivation from Old Dutch Leudhari (a personal name) or a compound of a first element cognate to Old Saxon lûtan (bend) and Old Dutch heri (sandy ridge). Compare De Lutte, Lutten and Lutten.
