Etymology

From Old High German līhzeihhan, from Proto-West Germanic *līkataikn. Originally equivalent to Leiche (body) + Zeichen (mark), remotivated as Leim (glue) + Zeichen (from the “gluing” of the wound). Cognate with Luxembourgish Läinzeechen, Dutch litteken.
