From Ottoman Turkish لهستان (Lehistan), from له (Leh, “Pole”) + ـستان (-istan, “-land”), from Old Ruthenian лѧхъ (ljax, “Pole”), from Old East Slavic лѧхъ (lęxŭ, “Pole”), from Proto-Slavic *lęxъ (“heath-dweller”). Equivalent to Leh (“Pole”) + -istan (“-land”).
